Oh, I was young. I remember playing Pokémon Red and Green on my Game Boy at that age. But I’ve always loved it.

Do you still play?

Yes, I still play. I got a Nintendo Switch and the Switch 2, so I’m looking forward to playing the new one when it comes out in October. It’s been a lot of fun.

It’s going well. Pretty good, actually.

Probably the base set shadowless Charizard, although it’s a bit beat up. Or maybe the Neo Genesis Lugia.

I do have the card. I want to get the first edition, but it’s quite expensive.

Do you sell the cards, or do you hold onto them?

I just hold onto them. I’m trying to complete a master set, so I’m slowly finding the cards. It’s a lot of fun.

Do you have a favorite card in your collection?

Out of sports cards, I have the entire printing plate line of my first Bowman. So, I own every card made on those plates.

How did you acquire that?

On eBay! (laughs)

Did you have to compete for them?

Oh yeah. Every day, we’d see one pop up, and my mom would be like, ‘Oh, look, another one has appeared.’ We’d stay up at late hours, bidding on it until the last second. It was fun.

When did you acquire it?

I got it in the first year I was drafted.

What other sports are you interested in besides baseball?

I played basically everything—basketball, football, soccer. As a kid, I was just running around. But right now, I’m really into football. Baseball and football are my two favorites.

Pretty quick. (laughs)

What position did you play in football?

I played tight end.

It’s pretty normal. Just eat what you can. I’m not great about eating, so it can be a challenge.

Is there something you can’t resist eating?

I don’t think there’s anything I have to eat if it’s put in front of me.

Who has been the most influential person for you on this journey?

In life, probably my girlfriend. She’s been with me through everything. We started dating in high school, and she has stuck with me through thick and thin, especially during my rough junior college years.

No, it’s wild. I don’t even know how to process it. My jersey’s on the table, and I just saw Shohei Ohtani and Freddie Freeman both sign it. It’s kind of crazy.
